Sanctuary lattice gate with bolt lock

 

Central Europe, second half of 16th century

 

Malleable iron. Forged bands riveted together to create diamond-shaped latticework. Forged to an arched frame. The rivets are underlaid with rosettes that have been cut and bent from hammered sheet. Mounted with two hinges and a bolt lock. The ends of the key guide are hammered into the plate.
